After a DUI Conviction

When you're arrested for DUI, your focus is understandably on fighting the charges, avoiding jail time, and minimizing driver's license suspension. But after a DUI conviction, there's still work to be done. In most states, you'll have to obtain proof of high-risk insurance before you can get your driver's license reinstated, and often maintain that insurance for years. There may also be restrictions on your driver's license, and you may be required to install an ignition interlock device on your car.

Because a DUI conviction may have consequences beyond those imposed by the court and the state-consequences like increased insurance costs and limitations on employment options-it may be in your best interest to try to clear your record by appealing your DUI conviction, filing a petition for post-conviction relief, moving to have your record expunged, or any of a variety of possible means for clearing your record of your DUI conviction.

If you've been convicted of a DUI and want to explore your options for clearing your record, talk to a local DUI lawyer about the possible remedies in your state.
