Former Duke Prosecutor Sentenced For Lying
Mike Nifong, former Duke prosecutor, was sentenced to serve one day in jail for lying to the judge when he was prosecuting Duke lacrosse players for an alleged rape.
Nifong had pushed forward with the prosecution of 3 Duke lacrosse players wrongly accused of raping a stripper at a party, when there was DNA evidence clearing them.
Today Nifong insisted that he didn’t intentionally lie to the judge about whether or not he had turned over the DNA evidence clearing the men.
Defense attorneys for the three accused Duke lacrosse players asked the judge to punish Nifong for failing to reveal all of the DNA test results, when he had told the judge in the case that he had.
Nifong faces contempt charges and if convicted he will face up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500. That seems pretty cheap, considering all that he has put these men and their families though by aggressively prosecuting a case he allegedly knew was severely flawed.
Nifong was disbarred in June for mishandling the case and resigned as the district attorney a short time later.
