The North Carolina Prosecutor who filed criminal charges against several Duke University Lacrosse players of raping a stripper may be disbarred for his actions. Mike Nifong is attending a disciplinary hearing regarding whether his prosecution of the athletes was so unethical that he should be barred from the practice of law.
Duke’s lacrosse team was suspended for the season and the players were kicked off the team. In January, the charges were dropped by the North Carolina Attorney General and Nifong was removed as a prosecutor. The players who are still attending Duke have been granted an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA. Duke played in the NCAA championship lacrosse game last month.
Nifong has been accused of withholding evidence from defense attorneys and lying to the court and North Carolina Bar investigators. Attorney General Roy Cooper concluded the players were “innocent” victims of a rogue prosecutor’s “tragic rush to accuse.”
