Slick Oilman Spotted on MTV
It was a princess-themed sweet 16 party that must have cost a fortune. The bash was filmed for My Super Sweet 16, an MTV reality show about spoiled rich kids and how lavish a party for a brat can really be. Like all MTV reality shows, My Super Sweet 16 regularly pushes the limits to be outrageous. Daddy bought his princess a new BMW to drive, took her on a shopping spree and then delivered her to her "sweet 16" bash in a helicopter. At the party there were huge tents shaped like a castle, ice sculptures, and the birthday girl was driven from the helicopter to the castle in a Cinderella-style carriage. There was a live band to entertain the 150 guests and later in the evening, a fireworks display.
Some people in the Nashville area were astonished and outraged by the show. Not because of the footage of the teen girl walking around an oil field proclaiming her love for oil because of all the things it could buy her, but because the doting daddy on the show was none other than Gary Milby, a man with oil fields in Kentucky who allegedly defrauded investors out of millions of dollars.
Investors and state regulators from Tennessee have been searching for oilman Gary Milby, a man they say defrauded 60 investors out of at least $4.5 million. He is being sued in federal court in four lawsuits. The lawsuits claim that Milby talked investors into buying securities for $18,000 each, promising some at least a 49 percent return within the first year. They also assert that five states have already ordered Gary Milby and his companies to stop advertising and selling the securities. Neither Gary Milby nor his companies were registered to sell securities in Tennessee.
The Arizona Corporation Commission ordered Milby to pay a $1 million penalty in September because he continued to sell securities despite a cease-and-desist order. To date, not a penny of the penalty has been paid. Milby did not show up for that hearing.
Investors feel that Gary Milby openly lied in order to make off with the money. Some even believe that his oil wells may be dry and that he staged dramatic fake oil well gushes when investors were touring the fields in order to get their money. They were furious to see Milby on MTV lavishly spending the money that they say he has stolen from them.
It would be interesting to hear Milby's side of the story but he has been hard to locate lately. His brother says that Milby roams a lot, but may be living in the Nashville area. An attorney for the investors believes he may be living in Kentucky. A hearing in federal court is set for June 15 but no one has been able to locate Milby and serve him. Perhaps he'll show up on another television show in the future but for the time being he seems to be lying rather low.
For the moment, it appears that no criminal charges have been filed against Milby.
